When PLA will not stick to the bed, the first layer lifts, beads up, or drags under the nozzle instead of bonding. PLA grips a warm sheet easy, so a lift almost always means the bed is too cold, too dirty, or out of level. Bambu’s first-layer guide and the IC3D PLA datasheet both point there.

Fast fixes to try first

Print a flat one-layer PLA square and lift a corner to test the grip, then work top to bottom and reprint after each step.

  1. Raise the bed

    Set the bed to 55 to 60 C so the PLA has the heat it needs to bond.

  2. Clean the sheet

    Wipe the sheet with isopropyl alcohol to remove oil, dust, and old glue.

  3. Level the bed

    Heat the bed, then set a light paper drag at all four corners and the center.

  4. Lower the Z-offset

    Drop the Z-offset a small step so the first layer presses into the sheet.

If the quick fixes stall

When heat and a clean sheet do not hold the layer, the surface and the filament are next.

  1. Try a textured sheet

    Textured PEI grips PLA well and releases the print clean.

  2. Slow the first layer

    Drop the first layer to about 20 mm/s so the PLA has time to bond.

  3. Dry the PLA

    If the layer looks rough, dry the spool at 40 to 50 C and reprint.

How PLA differs

PLA sticks the easiest of the common filaments, because it prints cool and grips a warm sheet with no enclosure. It needs only a 55 to 60 C bed, where PETG wants 80 to 90 C and ABS wants 90 to 100 C and an enclosure. PLA is also the least hygroscopic, so wet PLA is a smaller factor than wet PETG, though a damp spool still lays a rough first layer.

Mistakes that lift the PLA layer

A few choices trade one problem for another.

Avoiddo not

  • Printing PLA on a cold bed, below 50 C.
  • Wiping the sheet with a dirty cloth or finger oils.
  • Lowering the Z-offset so far the first layer ripples.
  • Changing bed temp, level, and Z-offset at once.
