Why storage matters
Filament is hygroscopic, so it absorbs moisture from the air around it. A spool left on an open shelf slowly goes wet even in a dry room, and a wet spool boils that water at the nozzle, which makes it pop, string, and print rough or weak. The fix is to keep the spool sealed away from humid air, with desiccant to hold the inside humidity low.
Dry the spool first if it has sat open, then store it sealed so you do not repeat the cycle. PETG and nylon pull in water faster than PLA, so they need tighter storage, but every filament benefits.
