PETG layer separation is what happens when the layers of a PETG print split apart along the layer lines. The part cracks, peels, or zips open at a seam instead of holding as one piece. Quick fixes to start with

Print a small PETG part and try to split it by hand, then work top to bottom and reprint after each step.

  1. Raise the nozzle temp

    Set the nozzle toward 230 to 240 C so each layer fuses to the last.

  2. Cut the cooling

    Drop part cooling to a low level so the PETG layers stay hot and bond.

  3. Lower the layer height

    Drop the layer height a step and reprint for tighter bonding.

  4. Dry the PETG

    If the layers look rough or pop, dry the spool at 60 to 65 C and reprint.

When the basics are not enough

When temp and cooling do not end the split, the print setup is next.

  1. Slow the print

    Drop the speed so each layer spends more time hot against the last.

  2. Widen the extrusion width

    A slightly wider line presses the layers together harder for a stronger bond.

  3. Print from the dryer

    Run the PETG from a filament dryer so moisture cannot weaken the bond mid-print.

How PETG differs

PETG bonds its layers well when it prints hot, but it needs that heat, so a nozzle tuned for PLA leaves the seams weak. It also wants low part cooling, where PLA takes high cooling, so a PLA cooling profile can split a PETG print. Wet PETG bonds worse, since the moisture changes how the melt lays down. ABS and ASA separate even more, but PETG is the one that splits silently when it runs too cool.

Mistakes that keep PETG splitting
