Where the name comes from
The “poly” means many molecules of lactic acid linked into a chain, and the “lactic” points to the plant-derived acid that forms it. The resin is thermoplastic, so it melts when heated and sets when it cools, which is what lets an FDM printer lay it down layer by layer. Because it comes from plant starch rather than oil, PLA is often described as bio-based, though a printed part is still plastic and is not automatically compostable in a home bin.
What the abbreviation means for buyers
The letters PLA on a spool tell you the base resin and the print behavior to expect: low nozzle heat, a warm bed, full cooling, and easy, reliable prints. They do not tell you the grade or the blend. A plain PLA spool prints the easiest but softens at a low temperature, so the acronym is a starting point for the material, not a full spec.
