Short answer

For miniatures you plan to paint and display, PLA is the filament to reach for, because it lays down a smooth, low-string surface that primer grabs and brushwork reads on. The goal here is finish and detail, not impact strength, and PLA wins both where it counts.

Paint adhesion is the whole game

A miniature is a painting canvas, so the filament’s surface matters more than its toughness. PLA prints with tight, even layer lines that sand back to a near-smooth shell, and primer bonds to it without flaking. That gives a clean base for acrylics and washes. PETG answers the common question of whether it works for minis, and the honest answer is yes, but with caveats. It is tougher, so a PETG figure survives handling, but it strings more, its layer lines are a little rougher to sand, and some primers need a light scuff to bond. For pure display painting, PLA is the cleaner start.

Choosing for your project

Pick PLA for anything you will paint, photograph, or display, where a smooth surface and crisp detail are the point. Reach for PETG only when a figure will be handled roughly and a little finish loss is worth the toughness.
