Short answer

For cosplay, PLA is the workhorse for static props and helmets because it prints large, sands smooth, and takes paint, while PETG is the pick for anything you wear that might get bumped or dropped. The choice comes down to whether the piece has to survive a crowded convention floor or just look good on a shelf.

What cosplay demands of a filament

A cosplay print is usually big, worn, and finished by hand. That means three things matter more than raw strength: low weight, a surface that sands and paints cleanly, and enough toughness to survive transport and wear. PLA nails the first two. It prints oversized parts without warping trouble, sands to a smooth primer-ready surface, and holds crisp detail for emblems and trim. The cost is brittleness, so a dropped PLA sword can snap.

PETG steps in where impact matters. It bends instead of cracking, so a PETG bracer or gauntlet survives a knock. The trade is a little more stringing and a surface that takes slightly more prep before paint. Reach for PLA for helmets, weapons, badges, and any decorative prop that will not be knocked around.
